UMW men's basketball receives Frontier honors

Frontier Conference commissioner Kent Paulson announced the all-conference men’s basketball team as well as individual award winners today after balloting by the league’s coaches. Three members of the University of Montana Western Bulldogs men’s basketball team and head coach Steve Keller received conference honors. Keller was selected as the 2011-2012 Coach of the Year. Keller led the 20th-ranked Bulldogs (10-4, 24-9) to a conference co-championship and a berth to the national tournament. It is the third straight year the Bulldogs will compete in the NAIA Division I national tournament in Kansas City, Mo. In his five years at the helm of the Bulldogs, Keller has compiled a 96-61 (.611) overall record and a 40-30 (.571) conference record. Three Bulldog seniors were selected to the Frontier Conference first team. Tyler Hurley and Kyle Erickson were honored for the first time and Brandon Brown for the second. Brown was also named Frontier Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year. Brown, the preseason pick of the league’s coaches to again win player of the year, lived up to his billing. He also led the Frontier in scoring (22.1 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg) for the second straight year. Brown was first in the conference in steals with 72, second in steals per game with 2.18 and is ranked in seven statistical categories at the national level. Brown has made 248-529 field goal attempts (.469), 65-211 three point attempts (.308) and 168-225 free throw attempts (.747). Hurley is second in scoring for the Bulldogs with 13.5 points per game (fifth in the conference) and tied with Erickson for first on the team at 5.9 rebounds per game (sixth in the conference). On the season, Hurley made 147-305 (.482) field goal attempts, 44-107 (.411) three point attempts and 107-146 (.733 – sixth in the conference) free throw attempts. Erickson is third on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game. He has 122 assists (3.7 apt), ranking him second on the team and third in the conference. Erickson is fourth in the conference with 67 offensive rebounds (2.03 per game) and ninth in steals with 39. On the season, Erickson made 139-256 (.543) field goal attempts, 36-89 (.404) three point attempts and 60-88 (.682) free throw attempts.
