The University of Montana Western has named Janelle Handlos interim athletic director and manager of the Bulldog Athletic and Recreation Complex (BARC). Handlos will take over for outgoing athletic director Mark Durham, who will be leaving his position on June 1, 2012.
Handlos has been the head certified athletic trainer at Montana Western since fall 2007. A Kennewick, Wash. native, she enrolled at Montana Western in 1996 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Health and Human Performance with an English minor in 2000.
“We couldn’t be happier to have Janelle serve as the interim athletic director,” Montana Western Chancellor Richard Storey said. “Aside from being a diehard Bulldog fan, she is a wealth of information in the areas of athletics and human health. As a professor, she is also absolutely committed to academics and making sure our student athletes succeed both in the classroom and in athletic competition.”
Handlos teaches first aid/CPR and nutrition courses within the Montana Western Education Department. She supervises students in many internship settings such as personal training, recreation programming, coaching and athletic training.
Handlos is the co-advisor of the UMW Humans in Performance (HIP) Club, which sponsors on- and off-campus activities related to health and wellness and encourages research by students. She is currently working on her dissertation on Leadership Development in Athletic Training Education Programs.
Handlos will become the interim athletic director and manager of the BARC in early June 2012 and says she is excited to pick up where Mark Durham left off.
"I'm very honored to have the opportunity to serve as interim athletic director at Montana Western,” Handlos said. “Working for Mark Durham for the past six years has allowed me to really appreciate his investment in our campus, and I am thankful for the direction in which Mark has moved our athletic programs. I am excited to continue to support this great coaching staff and our student athletes during this transition."
