Grand Junction, Colo., Nov. 29-30, 2013 – The Montana Western men’s basketball team traveled to Colorado to play in the Holiday Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa University over the Thanksgiving holiday.
The UMW men played two NCAA Division II teams and competed well. They ended up losing in both contests, but played with effort and gave themselves opportunities to win only to come up a little short.
The tournament and play versus the NCAA teams gives some insight to the personality and potential of the 2014 Bulldog basketball team. These games allow the coaches and players alike to find out their strengths and weaknesses as they prepare for Frontier Conference play. The exhibition losses were tough and emotional losses, but there are some positives that can be taken away from both games.
In the first game versus Colorado Mesa the Bulldogs had four players score in double digits. Jake Owsley added 8 rebounds to his 14 point evening and Kris Castro had 8 assists and 6 rebounds. On Saturday Maazin Butler showed everyone he is capable of exploding by scoring 28 points while bringing down 6 rebounds. Kris Castro had another solid game scoring 7 points, dishing out 6 assists, and bringing down 12 rebounds.
