WHITEFISH, Mont., Nov. 27, 2013 — Frontier Conference commissioner Kent Paulson announced the 2013 all-conference football teams today. The teams are chosen in voting by the league’s coaches.
The University of Montana Western football team had six players earn Frontier All-Conference honors. There were three Bulldogs selected to the first team and three more selected to the second team.
First Team All-Conference Offense – Senior Tight End A.J. Smith
A.J. is a 6’ 2” senior from Sandpoint, Idaho. Smith received second team honors as a junior and has been invited to play in the USA Football Bowl for seniors.
First Team All-Conference Defense – Senior Linebacker Kasey Griffith
Kasey is a 5’ 9 215 pound linebacker from Emmett, Idaho. Griffith led the conference with 120 total tackles. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one fumble recovery.
First Team All-Conference Defense – Junior Safety Jesse McCloud
Jesse is a 6’ 0” 195 pound safety from Manhattan, Mont. He returns to the All-Conference team for a second year in a row after he received second team honors following his sophomore campaign. He tallied 55 total tackles and one interception this season while patrolling the Bulldog secondary.
Second Team All-Conference Selections
Sophomore offensive Lineman Will Thacker – 6’ 1” 290 Winnemucca, Nev.
Freshman running back Sam Rutherford – 6’ 1” 215 Centerville, Mont. Rutherford introduced himself to the Frontier Conference by gaining 815 yards on 128 attempts for an average of 116.4 yards per game. He also added 11 touchdowns.
Junior defensive lineman Phil Selin – 6’ 2” 235 Great Falls, Mont. Selin led the conference in 2013 with 9 sacks and added 12 tackles for loss.
