The University of Montana Western men’s basketball team split their two home games when they hosted Rocky Mountain College on Friday night and Dickinson State on Saturday night. The UMW men could not overcome a second half 17-3 run by the Battlin’ Bears on Friday and lost by a score of 81-93. The Bulldogs were able to make a quick turnaround and beat DSU 91-68 on Saturday night.

Montana Western and Rocky played a back and forth game in the first half trading the lead five times and having five ties. RMC went into halftime with a slim 38-37 lead over the Bulldogs. The first three and half minutes of the second half the UMW men gained a narrow one point lead of their own with a 48-47 lead. With 15:27 on the clock UMW’s Jake Owsley was called for a travel and subsequent turnover. Owsley slammed the ball to the court and caught the ball as it bounced back up to him. The official quickly rang Owsley up for a technical foul. Montana Western was called for their second technical foul in 41 seconds when Coach Steve Keller was assessed with a techinical. The Rocky men took advantage and went on a 17-3 run over 2:09 and gained a 13-point lead that they would not relinquish.

Two other RMC players, Malachi Roberts and Jeremy Nichols, scored in double digits as they had 14 and 12 points. Barndt had a monster game overall as he pulled down 15 rebounds to go along with the big night on the scoreboard. RMC shot 83 percent from the free-throw line converting 24-of-29 attempts, while UMW converted on only 12-of-27 attempts for 44 percent. The Bulldogs were led by Tyler Miller’s 17 points off the bench while Jordan Overstreet added 14 from the bench as well. Maazin Butler added 12 points and Kris Castro had 11 points, five assists and eight rebounds.

UMW made more free-throws than the Blue Hawks attempted. The Bulldogs made 35-of-42 attempts from the line, as DSU went 19-for-29 from the line. Dickinson State was led by Tevin Russell and Jacob Volk who had 15 points apiece. Montana Western had four players score in double figures. Jake Owsley led all scorers with 21 points. Maazin Butler had 14 points, Tyler Miller had 11 points, and Jordan Overstreet added ten points of his own.

The UMW men take on MSU-Northern, who is tied for first in the Frontier Conference with Rocky Mountain College, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Thursday’s game is Military Appreciation night as current and former military personnel receive free admission to the game. Fans are encouraged to wear black clothing as the game is a “black out” game as well. On Saturday the Bulldogs will take on Great Falls at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s game is senior night.
