Second half surge lifts Bulldogs over Argos

The University of Montana Western Bulldog men’s basketball team outscored the University of Great Falls Argos 38-30 in the second half and went on to defeat the Argos 74-68 Friday night. By Lowell Peterson  The University of Montana Western Bulldog men’s basketball team outscored the University of Great Falls Argos 38-30 in the second half and went on to defeat the Argos 74-68 Friday night.  The first half featured five ties and eight lead changes. The hot-shooting Argos drained eight of thirteen three point shots in the opening period and James Holmes made the final one with just over a minute to play sending UGF into the break with a 38-36 lead. Tyler Hurley scored 12 first half points for the Bulldogs and Leon Sutton nailed three shots from long range to lead the Argos with nine points at the break.                                                                                   The first six minutes of the second half featured six lead changes and a tie before the fifteenth and final lead change of the night occurred. Kyle Erickson found Bridger Chambers in the key for a duce putting the Bulldogs on top for good 49-48. Montana Western (3-0, 15-4) hung on to the lead, three times extending the margin to nine points on baskets by Hurley, Cedric Clarington and Brandon Brown.  A Marcel Townes basket pulled the Argos (0-2, 12-5) to within four, 70-66, with twenty-seven seconds to play but Brown made three free throws and Tyler Miller added one to secure the victory.  Hurley led the Bulldogs with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assist. Brown scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists and Erickson scored 14 points, with eight rebounds and five assists. Kyle Perry (eight points and two blocks), Clarington (six points and four assists) and Chambers (three points and four rebounds) made solid contributions off the bench. As a team Montana Western shot .491 (27-55) from the field, .389 (7-18) on three pointers and .520 (13-25) from the free throw line. The Argos had five players score in double figures. Holmes led the way with 13, Townes and Sutton each scored 11 and Melvin Williams and Miguel Bocachica both scored 10. Ken Anderson was the rebound leader with eight, Williams dished out six assists and Sutton had four steals. Great Falls was .406 (26-64) from the field, .458 (11-24) from beyond the three point line and .500 (5-10) on free throws. Both teams face another conference foe on Saturday. Montana Western, winners of four in a row and eight of their last nine, travels to Havre, Mont. to play the Montana State University-Northern Lights (2-0, 16-2) at 6 p.m. The Lights have a ten game winning streak and like the Bulldogs are undefeated in conference play. The University of Great Falls hosts the Montana Tech Orediggers (1-2, 9-5) at 5:30 p.m. Montana Tech lost to MSU-Northern 52-62 Friday night in Havre.
