By Lowell Peterson The University of Montana Western women’s basketball program announced the signing of Emma Oostdyk of Missoula, Mont. Oostdyk, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, played high school basketball for the Frenchtown High School Broncs under Coach Jim Tolman. Oostdyk earned three varsity letters for basketball and received a Coaches Award and Most Improved Award at Frenchtown. She was named first team all-conference and all-state in 2012 for a Frenchtown team that won the divisional championship. Coach Tolman praised Oostdyk for her work ethic on the court, her leadership and her ability to encourage her teammates and keep them loose whether they were varsity or freshman team players. “While Emma was first team all-conference and an all-state selection this year, I think her biggest contribution to our team and its success was her leadership,” Tolman said. “Emma is a tremendously hard worker on both ends of the floor both in practice and during the games, and sets an example for all of her teammates. I am excited to see how Emma does at Montana Western and she is excited about going.” Oostdyk also won three varsity letters for softball and received a High School All-American Scholar Athlete award. She received two varsity letters as a member of the cheer squad, was all-state in choir in 2008 and 2011, choir president and homecoming and prom queen in 2012. “I chose UMW because of the friendly atmosphere, great athletic program and location,” Oostdyk said. She is the daughter of Roy and Sandy Oostdyk and plans to study business at Montana Western.
