By Wally Feldt Montana Western opened their 2009-2010 season with an 80-74 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in a men’s non-conference college basketball game. Montana Western is now 1-0 on the season while the Pronghorns drop to 1-1. The Bulldogs opened on fire scoring the game’s first nine points. Lethbridge took advantage of cold shooting from UMW and began chipping away at the lead and trailed 32-36 at the break. Montana Western opened the second half with a 16-3 run and lead 49-35 after the first five minutes. After a timeout, the Pronghorns outscored UMW 19-5 and cut the Bulldog lead to six, 57-51 with 8:45 remaining. The Bulldogs built the lead back to 10 on baskets from Brandon Lawson and JaRon Brown with 7:27 left. Over the next four minutes, Lethbridge trimmed the Bulldog lead to just four 69-65. The Bulldogs led 80-71 with eight seconds remaining when the Pronghorns’ Jeffery Price hit a three point basket to end the game. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures led by JaRon Brown with 19. Terry Hauser was next with 12 followed by Brandon Lawson and Brandon Brown with 11 each. Brown also led the team in rebounds with eight. Price led the Pronghorns with 20 points followed by Rob Cooper with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The two teams meet again on Saturday, Oct. 16. Tipoff is 2 p.m. from Montana Western’s Straugh Gymnasium.
