By Wally Feldt The University of Montana Western men’s and women’s basketball teams host two non-conference opponents in a double-header on Thursday, Nov. 19 in the Straugh Gymnasium. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. against the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks followed by the Bulldog men hosting the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM radio. The Montana Western women are 3-4 on the season after going 1-2 at the Westminster College Fall Classic tournament. The Bulldogs faced three nationally ranked teams losing to Westmont College 57-67 and Point Loma Nazarene 58-75 and beating College of Idaho 78-67. Nicole Tams leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 12.7 points per game (ppg). Montana Western is averaging 60 ppg while giving up 77. Dickinson State, an NAIA Division II team, were 26-7 last year and are the defending regular season and tournament champions of the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Blue Hawks advanced to the Elite-8 of the NAIA national tournament. Two victories last year were over Montana Western, 79-76 in Dillon and 75-62 at Dickinson. The Blue Hawks are 3-1 this season with victories over the defending NAIA Division II national champions Morningside College 93-82 and Frontier Conference teams MSU-Northern 57-55 and University of Great Falls 78-68. Dickinson suffered their first loss a week ago when they lost at Montana State University-Northern 67-68. Kia Herbel leads Dickinson in scoring and rebounding with 23.5 points and 12 rebounds per game. The Blue Hawks average 74 points per game and give up 68. The Montana Western men are 6-1 on the season and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. The Bulldogs’ last action was two weeks ago when they beat Eastern Oregon 77-61 and Walla Walla 99-74 at the Quinn Classic before returning to Dillon to beat Simpson University 101-52. Four Bulldogs are averaging double-figure scoring led by JaRon Brown with 16 ppg, Layne Glaus with 15 ppg and Brandon Lawson and Terry Hauser with 11.7 ppg. Garrett Fink leads the team in rebounding with eight rebounds per game. Montana Western averages 91 ppg while giving up 67. Eastern Oregon, a member of the Frontier Conference in football, is a member of the Cascade Athletic Conference in basketball. The Mountaineers were 25-8 last year and are 3-1 this season. Their wins were over Walla Walla twice, 105-67 and 83-55, and Montana Tech 69-42. Jordan Gregg leads the Mountaineers with 14 ppg and eight rebounds per game. Eastern averages 80 ppg while giving up 60.
