By Wally Feldt The Bulldogs lost twice at the Wendy's Holiday Classic basketball tournament in Caldwell, Idaho over the weekend. The Bulldogs lost 81-78 against the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders on Friday. Montana Western jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead, but the Crusaders rattled off 10 straight points to take their first lead of the night. The teams would exchange the lead eight times before a pair of free throws gave NNU the lead for good at 35-33. The Crusaders led 41-36 at the break. The Crusaders took their biggest lead of the night at 66-54, but the Bulldogs chipped away using an 11-3 run to get within four points on a Layne Glaus lay-up with four minutes remaining. Montana Western got three straight defensive stops, but could not close the gap. Terry Hauser led Montana Western with 24 points followed by Cody Thueringer with 12 and Glaus adding 11. The Bulldogs leading scorer, JaRon Brown, was limited to eight points by foul trouble, seeing just 17 minutes of action. On Saturday, the Bulldogs saw another lead wither as the College of Idaho came from behind to win 80-62. Steve Peres of the College of Idaho hit back-to-back three-pointers, which were part of a key 13-2 College of Idaho second-half run that erased a Montana Western lead as the Coyotes rolled to an 82-60 victory. The Coyotes used a barrage of 14 three-point baskets in the win, including connecting on seven of their first nine long-range attempts, building a 26-16 first-half lead. However, the Coyotes would go one for their next 12 from outside the arc, allowing Montana Western to claw back in and take a 50-48 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining. Glaus led Montana Western with 18 points, but the team struggled all night from the field converting just 32 percent of their field goals and 20 percent of their three-point attempts. The Bulldogs close their non-conference season on Dec. 29 and 30 when they travel to Spearsfish, S.D. for games against the South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State University.
