Montana Western equestrian team adds English title

The Montana Western equestrian team made history after winning the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association regional English title last weekend. Montana Western is the first school in Zone 3 history to win both the English and Western title in the same year. By Wally Feldt 006_6The University of Montana Western equestrian team captured the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Region 3, Zone 8 English Team Championship on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8 in Missoula, Mont. It is the first time in the history of the region the same team has won both the Western and the English title in the same year. In addition to the regional show, Montana Western competed in two regular season English shows.

Saturday morning show

Sam Essig took first in walk-trot. Kindle McCauley placed fourth in beginning walk-trot canter. Emily Cornell took second in advanced walk-trot canter. In novice section 1, Carissa Callison took first and Brenda Cole placed third in novice section 2. Kristin Bredl placed fourth in intermediate. In open, Kristen Gfroerer and Amanda Gelderman placed first and fourth, respectively. Linda Sieverkropp placed fifth in novice fences. Kristin Bredl placed fourth in intermediate fences. In open fences, Amanda Stephenson took first, Amanda Gelderman second and Kristen Gfroerer fourth. The Montana Western team won reserve high-point team. Kristen Gfroerer won reserve high-point rider.

Saturday afternoon show

Gelderman took first, Gfroerer second and Stephenson sixth in open fences. Bredl took first in intermediate fences. In novice fences, Sieverkropp placed fifth. In open, Gelderman took first and Stephenson sixth. Bredl took first in intermediate. In novice section 2, Sieverkropp placed third. Cornell and Shannon Dean took second and fifth, respectively, in advanced walk-trot canter. In beginning walk-trot canter, McCauley took first. Essig finished first in walk-trot. Montana Western won high-point team. Gelderman won high-point rider and Bredl won reserve high-point rider. Their performance in the afternoon show clinched the regional title for season Montana Western.

Sunday morning regional show

In walk-trot, McCauley took second to qualify for zones. Bredl placed fourth in novice. Stephenson took first in intermediate, qualifying for zones. Gelderman took second in open, qualifying for zones. In novice fences, Bredl took second, qualifying for zones. In intermediate fences, Gfroerer took second, qualifying for zones, and Stephenson placed third. Gelderman took second in open fences, qualifying for zones. Montana Western will send a team to zones and the individuals that qualified to compete at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif. on April 10 and 11, 2010.
