Bulldog women first, men second in Big Sky Region rodeo

The University of Montana Western Bulldogs men’s and women’s rodeo teams competed at the Big Sky Region rodeo in Havre, Mont. held from Sept. 16 to 18. By Lowell Peterson The University of Montana Western Bulldogs men’s and women’s rodeo teams competed at the Big Sky Region rodeo in Havre, Mont. held from Sept. 16 to 18. The event was hosted by Montana State University-Northern (MSU-N) and consisted of a long go-round on Friday and Saturday with the top ten finishers in each event going on to the short round on Sunday. The Montana Western men’s rodeo team finished second with 390 points while the women’s team won the top spot, finishing first with 270 points. Montana Western's Tanner Denton finished second in saddle bronc riding. AJ St. Goddard (fifth), Chase Redfield (sixth) and Tucker Zingg (seventh) finished in the top ten in bareback riding. Drew Baker finished sixth in bull riding and Colton Sargent (fourth) and Chase Briggs (eighth) made strong showings in tie down roping. Bridger Chambers and Matthew Irish tied for fifth in Steer Wrestling. The Bulldog men finished fourth through sixth in team roping. Kody Lahaye and partner Colt Gardner were fourth, Chambers and partner Briggs were fifth and Chicky Wines and partner Zingg finished sixth. The Montana Western women placed five contestants in the top ten in three events. Cassidy Nordahl finished first in goat tying, Kelli Saltness tied for third and Megan Crist tied for fifth. Kylene Reynolds tied for fifth in barrel racing and Justine Marshall (sixth) and Morgin Sheppard (eighth) placed in breakaway roping. With the successful weekend, the Montana Western men’s team (2,245 points) sits in second place in the seven-team Big Sky Region (BSR) standings. Other members of the BSR are Montana State University, the University of Montana, Miles Community College, Northwest College, Dawson Community College and Montana State University-Northern. The Montana Western women’s team advanced to second place with 879 total points. The Bulldog women were in fifth place after their first rodeo.
