Montana's poet laureate visits Montana Western

Pape will be reading at The Cup at 7:30 p.m. as a part of the UMW English department's visiting writer series, "Dances with Words." greg papeMontana’s current poet laureate, Greg Pape, will visit the University of Montana Western on Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. to give a reading of his poetry. Pape will read in the basement of the Swysgood Technology Center at UMW’s on-campus espresso bar, The Cup. Pape’s visit will be a part of “Dances with Words,” a visiting writer series at Montana Western. UMW’s English department sponsors the series funded by the university and local patrons. Pape is the author of five books, including “Border Crossings,” “Black Branches,” “Storm Pattern,” “Sunflower Facing the Sun,” and most recently, “American Flamingo.” He has also been published in many magazines and anthologies, including “The New Yorker,” “The Atlantic Monthly,” “Poems of the American West,” and “Real Things: An Anthology of Popular Culture.” Pape has a Master of Arts in English from California State University, Fresno, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona. His teaching experience includes Hollins College, the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Alabama, the University of Louisville, Northern Arizona University, Florida International University and Spalding University. He has been teaching at the University of Montana since 1987. At Pape’s request, this installment of “Dances with Words” will also feature Montana Western's own English professor and poet, Roger Dunsmore. Dunsmore taught at the University of Montana from 1963 until 2003 where he received his MFA in Creative Writing in 1971. Since 2005, Dunsmore has taught at Montana Western. In 2005, Dunsmore was among the list of poets given to the governor for the position of poet laureate. Mark your calendars and plan to attend “Dances with Words” on Thursday, Februrary 19 at 7:30 p.m. for an evening with our poet laureate.
