The University of Montana Western Cantabileers, a select choral group, are excited to announce their Winter Concert to be held on Tuesday, December 6. The concert will be held in the Beier Auditorium on the Montana Western campus at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
The Cantabileers have worked all semester to put together a fun and dynamic program to share with the community. In this concert, students will conduct and perform traditional holiday songs, newer selections, and works in other languages. There will be ensemble pieces, solos, and duets, with accompaniment provided by Susie Steadman, Johnny Reedy, and body percussion.
The ensemble is an experiential course which highlights students in leadership roles every step of the way. The Winter Concert is both a demonstration of the time and creativity the students have put into their work and a fun musical event to celebrate the season with the community.
“One thing I love about the Cantabileers is the strong sense of community that develops as they try new things. The course started out decades ago as a select choir, but it’s become so much more than that. The semester begins with students selecting pieces that fit the singers’ voices. They have to consider the range of notes, the difficulty of conducting the piece, the complexity of how the parts interact, the language of the piece, and perhaps most importantly, what they will enjoy working on. Students have done some arranging, and they aren’t afraid to experiment. We have a few pieces where students have put their own spin on things, and we’re excited to share their talents and creativity with the community,” said Dr. Debbie Seacrest, the group’s director.
