Dual Enrollment 101

Dual Enrollment

The broad term for various types of opportunities for high school students to take college course work while they are enrolled in high school.

Dual Credit

Awards both high school credit and college credit for a college course taken by the high school student. Dual credit courses may be taught on the college campus, online, or as a hybrid.

Concurrent Credit

A dual credit course that is specifically taught by an approved, qualified high school instructor, and taught within the regular school schedule.

Early College

Awards college credit for a college course taken by the high school student. No high school credit is earned.

Credit Limit

Amount of dual enrollment credits a high school student may take during a semester. UMW limits the number of dual enrollment credits to 12 per semester.

The Montana University System (MUS) is comprised of sixteen public universities and colleges across Montana.

Common Course Numbering (CCN)

The Common Course Numbering (CCN) system was established to provide Montana University System (MUS) students with a reasonable level of transparency and predictability for the transfer of courses and credits within the MUS system.  

Transfer

Courses that are part of the MUS Common Course Numbering system are designed to transfer within the MUS system. How the course is applied is up to the discretion of the institution and degree program.
