Montana Western hosts summer athletic camps.

June 24, 2016

The Montana Western athletics department puts on several sports camps each summer, including men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and football.

The camps draw students from across Montana with campers ranging from fourth to 12th grade.

Most instructors are student-athletes and health and human performance (HHP) majors who are studying at Montana Western to become coaches and teachers.

“These camps fit in well with our dedication to experiential learning because it allows our students to gain hands-on experience with the age group they eventually want to teach,” HHP Professor Janelle Handlos said. “Students also get to learn from coaching professionals who share their expertise and help advance the coaching field.”

The facilities at Montana Western allow for students to practice all day at the Bulldog Athletic and Recreation Center and sleep and dine in the University’s Mathews Hall.

“Montana Western has the ideal facilities to host summer athletic camps,” women’s basketball coach Lindsay Woolley said. “We have the space to accommodate more than two hundred campers in just one building and our community is a friendly and safe place to send kids.”

Tremendous growth and returning athletes is evidence of the success of the camps, Woolley explained.
