The Behavioral Intervention Team BIT/CARE Team reviews referrals daily Monday through Friday (during normal institution operating hours). Referrals received after 4:00 pm will be reviewed the next business day. For emergencies, please call 911.

The BIT/CARE Team will assess the level of risk and develop an appropriate action plan. This plan may include the following steps:


1.) Follow up with the Referral Source

A team member may follow up with the referral source to discuss the referral and see if any additional information is available that might assist the BIT/Care Team in engaging with the referred individual.  If at any point the referral source remembers/discovers/gathers additional details or insights they believe would be helpful to share with the BIT/Care Team, they can inform BIT/Care at any time. In certain cases, the BIT/Care Team will keep the referral source updated on the progress of this matter, while also respecting the privacy rights of the referred individual(s) involved. The referral source is welcome to contact the BIT/CARE Team at any time to follow up on their referral.   

If the referral source is employed by UMW, they will receive an update on case progress within 5 to 10 business days from submission. Our team takes the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other privacy guidance/laws seriously and are dedicated to protecting the privacy of referred individuals as appropriate.

2.) Outreach to the Referred Individual

The BIT/CARE Team may contact the referred individual by e-mail, phone, and/or text message. In high-risk cases, the BIT/CARE Team may partner with law enforcement or other appropriate partners to attempt immediate contact through a welfare check.

3.) One-on-one Services with the Referred Individual

A Case Manager or BIT/CARE Team member may meet with the referred individual to discuss the referral and their holistic wellness and to allow the Case Manager or BIT/CARE Team member to assess the individual’s needs. The Case Manager or BIT/CARE Team member will then work with the individual and the BIT/CARE Team to connect the individual with the most appropriate resources. The Case Manager or BIT/CARE Team member will assist the referred individual to connect with resources and engage in follow-up services, as needed. [Engagement in follow-up services is voluntary.]

4.) Collaboration and Consultation

The goal is to provide the referred individual with support based on their needs, strengths, and experiences. To do this, the BIT/CARE Team may collaborate and consult with campus or community resources. The BIT/CARE Team may share information about the referred individual and their situation that helps the resource know how to best support the referred individual, consistent with applicable privacy laws and policies.
