100.2 Use of Personal Transportation- Bicycles, Skateboards, Scooters and Battery Operated Self-Balancing Boards

  1. Policy

    The use of non-motorized bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and in-line skates shall be allowed as a means of transportation on sidewalks, walkways, and roadways of The University of Montana Western.  The use, possession or storage of battery operated self–balancing boards (Hover Boards, Segways, IO’s, Hawks, and similar equipment) is prohibited in University owned buildings or on University property.

  2. Purpose

    This policy is instituted due to a concern for the safety of individuals in the University and broader communities, for the protection of campus property, and for matters of institutional liability.

  3. Procedures

Anyone using one of the approved methods of travel shall give right of way to any pedestrian and shall travel at a speed no greater than twice that of walking speed.

Under no circumstances will the approved vehicles be allowed on ramps, curbs, benches, steps, or other pieces of buildings or decorations

None of the approved vehicles are permitted for use inside any building.

Due to fire concerns, no battery operated, self-balancing board may be used or stored anywhere on University property.

        Enforcement:

A.      A person in violation of this policy will be asked to stop the activity and/or leave the campus and may be cited for a criminal violation
such as disorderly conduct (MCA 45-8-101) or criminal mischief (MCA 45-6-101).

B.      If the violator is a current UMW student, the individual will also be subject to sanctions under the Student Conduct Code.
