UMW Step UP! Bystander Intervention educates students on how to effectively intervene as bystanders, or the people around the situation, in problematic situations. The Step UP! Bystander Intervention program was created by the University of Arizona in collaboration with the NCAA. The University of Montana Western implemented Step UP! in 2015.
The primary goal of bystander intervention is to prevent problematic situations including: substance abuse, sexual assault, relationship abuse, hazing, discrimination, and depression. Step UP! aims to raise awareness of helping behaviors, increase motivation to help, develop skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns, and ensure the safety and well-being of students. Through various programs and presentations, students are provided with education and tools to effectively intervene and create a healthy environment for themselves, their peers, and the community.
The University of Montana Western Step UP! Bystander Intervention program is committed to creating a positive campus climate by encouraging students to step up, be a leader, and make a difference.
